We left the treehouse cabin this morning and we took a road called The Tail of The Dragon. It is an 11 eleven mile stretch of road with 318 curves. It was crazy. Would be fun to do again but it is in the middle of nowhere! We are home safe and sound. It was a fun trip.
Our final morning in Savannah was spent by finding a nice sidewalk breakfast cafe and then going to a tour of the Green-Meldrim House. I did not take my camera in as it was last minute but it was a spectacular home from the 1850's. It is in the photos of our first day there a few posts earlier. We then headed for North Carolina to stay the night in a treehouse cabin for the final night of our trip. Long day tomorrow on the road ahead!
Our final full day in Savannah began with a tour of The Cathedral Basilica of St John, a 200 year old Catholic church. We then got in the car and went to the Bonaventure Cemetery, which was made famous in the book and movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. From there it was off to Old Fort Jackson, where, despite the extreme heat and humidity we sat through a very informative session from one of the workers in full woolen uniform. He fired a 6 inch cannon as well. Then it was off to Tybee Island for a stroll on the Atlantic coast. We ended our night with a nice dinner at the Olde Pink House, a restaurant that began as a home in the late 1700's.
Today we did a ton of walking! We started the day by going to Forsyth Park to the south, then to the west to see the Georgia State Railroad Museum and Savannah History Museum. Then back to see the house where Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was filmed before then heading north for lunch and to walk the City Market. We went back to our rental for a rest before heading back to the riverfront for a walk and ice cream.
Day 2 of our trip was began with heading to Talladega, AL to visit the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. One of my favorite all-time race cars had been put on display there and I really wanted to see it. It is the Budweiser #8 Monte Carlo that won 3 straight races at Talladega. After that, we headed for Savannah and walked River St and then strolled a little at dusk. More fun tomorrow.
